Homelessness, Hygiene and the Power of Shower

Giving Back Confidence One Shower at A Time

Imagine not having access to a shower or washroom. For those without shelter, personal hygiene is a daily struggle. This lack of access to facilities can create more significant barriers for those already vulnerable and in need.

We don’t always think of the importance or impact of something as simple as running water, but having access to a hot shower is the first step for homeless people to rekindle their sense of dignity and break the cycle of homelessness. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. The WHO states that “there is no health without mental health.” Throughout Jesus’ life, we are shown example after example of the importance of clothing, feeding and caring for those in need. So how can we support those in our community without access to these essential services?

The Upper Room Mission offers washroom, laundry, and shower services daily. In the past year, The Upper Room Mission has provided 1750 showers, 948 loads of clean laundry, and 1297 individuals have received new clothing. Our facilities are run by our fantastic staff, who also offer a listening ear, kindness and radical hospitality for our guests, no matter what they may be going through. We provide a safe place for them to keep their belongings without the worry of theft and the dignity of feeling comfortable and clean.

Providing connection, community and holistic care for our guests allows us to give them a chance to hope again and to find a sense of self-love, respect and confidence that can help them move forward positively. As we continue to pursue holistically supporting and loving our guests, we need to cover the rising cost of offering these services for free. Between the kitchen, laundry, washroom and showers, we rack up a hefty water bill each month. Our water bill is approximately $5000 annually or $417 monthly. We are looking for individuals, businesses and groups that would like to partner with us in raising these funds to continue to offer and expand our services to our community. Together we can give back dignity and hope and share the love of God with those most in need in our community.

I wonder if you could have people top up their utility bill to the nearest dollar like Telus does. People could opt in and their bills would automatically have it on there and the money collected could go to this program.
