Finding Purpose in a Broom and a Smile:
The Cleanup Crew at the Upper Room Mission

At the Upper Room Mission, hope often starts with something simple—a warm meal, a listening ear, a safe place to rest. But for some of our guests, hope takes the shape of a broom, a garbage bag, and a pair of gloves.
Each day, a small team of guests heads out as part of our cleanup crew, tidying up our property and one of our neighbouring lots. They work for about an hour and receive an honorarium in appreciation for their time and effort. It’s more than just a task—it’s a meaningful way to give back, build work experience, and feel a sense of dignity and purpose.
One guest shared, “A time the Upper Room Mission has given me hope is when they gave me work experience, wealth, health, and a place to give out smiles and hope.”
Another guest, Michael A., reflected, “I was homeless. The Mission stepped up and got the ball rolling. Now I’m clean, 7 months in a safe place. The staff is incredible—kind, supportive. I bless you every day.”
And another beautifully summed it up by saying, “A time the Upper Room Mission has given me hope is when I realized the missing part in my heart was giving back to others. I love this place.”
These opportunities aren’t just about cleaning up—they’re about lifting up. They create space for confidence to grow and for community to form. Many guests express deep gratitude for the chance to contribute to something bigger than themselves.
This is all part of what we call the circle of care—a relationship-based model of support that fosters trust, consistency, and compassion. When trust is built, something beautiful happens: generosity flows both ways. Our guests give back in powerful ways—through their time, their stories, their kindness, and their growing sense of purpose. And in return, our staff, volunteers, and donors are reminded of why this work matters so deeply.
Now, we’re dreaming even bigger.
We are currently fundraising to expand our program so we can provide housing to our guests on a 24/7 basis. Everyone deserves their basic needs met: a roof over their head, nourishing food, access to showers and laundry, and a clean, safe place to sleep.
When our guests are supported, they thrive. With a decent night’s sleep and stability, we see mental health improve, motivation return, and the eagerness to contribute grow stronger. They want to be part of the Mission—not just as recipients of help, but as people who help in return.
You can be part of that circle of care.
With your support, we can make 24/7 care and housing a reality. Your donation helps build a foundation for healing, hope, and purpose. You help us create a space where trust leads to transformation, and generosity is shared in every direction.
