A story of hope

"It’s never tasted so good to be sober!"

Stories of transformation often go untold. Working on the frontlines and supporting individuals in crisis, we don’t always hear about the next chapters in their lives—when they find housing, enter detox or recovery, or move forward in other meaningful ways. Our role is to serve people during a critical moment in their journey, connecting them with organizations that provide housing, mental health care, and other essential services to support their long-term well-being.

Meet Guy. When we first met him, Guy was homeless and among the most challenging individuals we served. His struggles left many of us praying, “Lord, please help Guy, because we don’t know how.”

At the time, Guy was restricted from accessing most social services in town, leaving him with few options. His mental health was declining rapidly, and The Mission was one of the only places left where he could find support. That year was especially difficult for him—he was arrested multiple times for minor infractions and eventually spent two months in jail. When he returned to The Mission after his release, we braced ourselves for more challenges. But something was different. Something had changed in Guy’s heart.

He was ready to turn his life around. Guy expressed a desire to step out of homelessness, reunite with his wife and child, and create a future for his family. With some encouragement, we connected him to the services he needed and provided counselling to help him rebuild his relationships. We walked alongside him as he navigated family services, embraced fatherhood, and worked toward independence.

Today, two and a half years later, we are thrilled to share that Guy is thriving. He now lives independently with his wife and daughter, and his commitment to giving back has made a lasting impact on us. In fact, Guy has become our regular driver at the Upper Room Mission, picking up groceries and donations from our community partners.

His journey is a testament to the power of hope, perseverance, and the transformative love that can emerge even in the toughest circumstances.

Below, you’ll find a video sharing more about Guy’s inspiring story.
