Position Summary:
The Winter Shelter Support Worker works closely with the guests to provide a safe environment and comfortable place to sleep during our winter months. Support staff are on the front line, respond to guest’s basic needs and provide the best experience possible. Crisis Intervention and Conflict Resolution can be a daily occurrence in this role. The Winter Shelter Support Worker will need to supervise the floor and ensure the duties are completed. This position is available from November 1 through to March 31, 2024.
General duties and responsibilities:
- Maintain a high level of professionalism, respect and gratitude with all staff, donors, volunteers, guests and visitors
- Ensure a safe and welcoming atmosphere for our guests
- Oversee intake of our guests using the winter shelter
- Provide intake, support, and supervision to guests who have registered to stay at our winter shelter program
- Oversee and support the setup of guests’ sleeping area
- Oversee bathroom and shower use
- Oversee meal/snack access for our guests
- Support the setup and takedown of the mat program
- Support the laundry needs for the winter shelter program
- De-escalating conflict and maintaining healthy boundaries
- Function in high-risk situations and respond quickly to guests in crisis
- In case of an emergency, call the police or EMS depending on the emergency
- Problem-solve, support and empower fellow staff and volunteer members
- Assure cleanliness and order of the Upper Room Mission winter shelter.
- Maintain the confidentiality of all guests, staff and volunteers
- Participate in staff training and meetings (e.g. First Aid, Naloxone, Non-Violence Crisis Intervention, CPR, etc.)
- Attend bi-weekly staff meetings, and monthly 1-1 meetings with Operations Manager
- Criminal Record Clearance-Vulnerable Sector-required.
- Other duties and site-related duties may be assigned when required

- Salary 20-22 per hour
- 10-hour shifts
- Full-time – 35 hours per week
- November to March
- $20.00-$22.00 per hour pending experience
- Night shift
