Update: Renovations for Our Shelter Floor are in Full Swing!
Renovations for our new shelter floor at the Upper Room Mission are in full awing! 🎉 This is a monumental step forward in enhancing our Winter Mat Program and establishing a dedicated, welcoming space for beds at the Mission.
A Safer, Warmer, and More Comfortable Shelter
As the colder months approach, these upgrades will allow us to provide warmth, safety, and comfort to those who need it most. Our mission has always been to serve Vernon’s most vulnerable, and this renovation brings us one step closer to offering a more stable and supportive environment.
Overcoming Challenges to Make This Possible
Getting to this point hasn’t been easy. Creating a new and safe shelter required extensive collaboration with architects, code consultants, and engineers to ensure all necessary building requirements were met. After overcoming these challenges, we have successfully moved into the construction phase, which includes electrical, plumbing, and HVAC installations. Our goal for completion is set for March 31, 2025.
Expanding Our Shelter Program Year-Round
Beyond the immediate renovations, we’re also working towards an even bigger goal: transitioning our winter shelter program into a year-round shelter program. We have applied for funding with BC Housing as part of our strategic plan to increase shelter capacity in Vernon and provide more consistent support for those experiencing homelessness.
Once funding is secured, we also hope to integrate active social work support to assist our guests in transitioning from shelter life into stable housing. This means offering resources and guidance to help individuals overcome homelessness, addiction, and poverty.
